California CC to UC/CSU Transfer Guide

Everything you need to know about transferring from a California community college to a UC or CSU campus. This guide covers timelines, IGETC, TAG, application tips, and more.

Transfer Overview

California has one of the best community college transfer systems in the country. The California Community Colleges (CCC) system is the largest higher education system in the nation, and the transfer pathway to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems is well-established and structured.

IGETC Requirements

The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses that community college students can complete to satisfy the lower-division general education requirements at both UC and CSU campuses. Completing IGETC means you won't need to take additional GE courses after transferring.

Important: Some majors (like Engineering at certain UCs) may recommend against IGETC. Always check the specific requirements for your target major on ASSIST.org.

Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)

TAG is a program that guarantees admission to a participating UC campus for eligible California community college students. Six UC campuses participate in TAG, and each has its own GPA and course requirements. TAG must be submitted by September 30 of the year you plan to transfer (the fall before your intended enrollment).

You can only TAG to one UC campus, but you can still apply to as many UC campuses as you like through the regular UC application in November.

Application Tips

1

Start with ASSIST.org

Always check the official articulation agreement for your specific community college, target university, and major. Course requirements can vary significantly.

2

GPA is King

For competitive campuses (UCLA, UC Berkeley), aim for 3.7+ GPA. Even for TAG campuses, a higher GPA gives you more major options.

3

Don't Neglect Your Essays

UC Personal Insight Questions are your chance to stand out. Be authentic, specific, and show growth. Start writing early.

4

Use All Available Resources

Visit your CC transfer center, attend UC/CSU rep visits, use ASSIST.org, and talk to your counselor regularly. Don't navigate this alone.

5

Apply Broadly

Apply to a range of schools including reaches, targets, and safeties. The UC application lets you apply to multiple campuses with one application.

6

Mind Your Deadlines

TAG: September 30. UC Application: November 1-30. CSU Application: October 1 - December 15. Missing a deadline means waiting another year.
